Databricks SQL WHERE 1=1

Martin DebusPosted on LinkedIn

Ever wondered why you see WHERE 1=1 in SQL queries? It’s not a mistake. It’s a smart pattern for building dynamic SQL.

When constructing SQL queries programmatically, adding filter conditions can get tricky. You need to handle whether it’s the first condition (WHERE) or subsequent ones (AND).

The WHERE 1=1 pattern simplifies this:

  • Start with WHERE 1=1 as your base condition (always true, no impact on results).
  • Append each filter condition with AND without checking if it’s the first one.
  • No special logic needed when there are zero filter conditions.
  • Code becomes cleaner and easier to maintain.

This is especially useful in:

  • ETL pipelines with optional filters
  • Reporting tools with dynamic user selections
  • Parameterized queries in notebooks

Try this pattern next time you’re building dynamic SQL queries in Databricks!
