I just tried out Databricks Serverless Workspaces in Azure and got a fully functional environment running in less than 3 minutes.
This is a game-changer for exploration and composable environments.
A serverless workspace is a workspace that comes preconfigured with serverless compute and default storage, providing a fully managed SaaS experience right out of the box.
Here’s what makes it interesting:
- Zero infrastructure setup: No need to configure compute clusters, storage accounts, or networking. Everything is managed by Databricks.
- Instant availability: From the Azure portal, just select “Serverless” as workspace type, pick a region, and you’re done. The workspace provisions automatically with all the essentials.
- Perfect for specific use cases: Ideal for quick exploration, internal training environments, testing, or even production workloads if you’re exclusively using serverless compute.
- Simplified management: Account admins can deploy and manage these workspaces without needing permissions to provision traditional cloud infrastructure.
The workspace comes with default managed storage and runs all workloads on serverless compute using environment versions instead of traditional runtimes. This means Azure Databricks can deliver performance improvements and bug fixes automatically without requiring code changes.
One thing to keep in mind: All the standard serverless compute and default storage limitations apply, so check the docs if you’re planning production workloads.
I see huge potential here for rapid prototyping and composable data environments. Being able to spin up a complete Databricks workspace in minutes without any infrastructure overhead opens up new possibilities for how we structure our development and testing workflows.
What use cases do you see for your organization?
